The 39 dead
39 people trying to get into Britain were found dead in a truck last week. They are thought to be Vietnamese. One dead woman apparently paid £20,000 for the trip.
Forgive my naivety here but why would people want to escape Vietnam that badly they would pay that amount of money to a criminal enterprise to attempt to get to Europe?
I always assumed people attempting to enter the west illegally came from failed states or were victims of ethnic or religious persecution.
I didn’t think there were any persecuted groups in Vietnam and whilst Vietnam’s socio-political structure Isn’t perfect Vietnam is in boom town economically.

But Fallow Spicer says that all the foreigners don't like us anymore and are going home.

Certainly there's not a lot of hardcore persecution in Vietnam, but in the eyes of many the economic boom is restricted to those who are connected.
In general, young educated Vietnamese give the impression of being more industrious, ambitious and curious about foreign opportunities than their equivalents in neighbouring countries.
They tend to be economic migrants: as most of us are.

About 100 illegal immigrants all heading to the UK to work in nail parlours and chinky takeaways.Daily Telegraph wrote:Police are investigating whether the container in which 39 migrants were found frozen to death in Essex was part of a convoy of three lorries.
Relatives of the suspected victims said they believed as many as 100 migrants were being brought from Vietnam to the UK on the lorries.
Daily Telegraph Article
Bet that the driver was surprised when he drove to a quiet industrial estate and flung open the back doors of the truck so that . . . "he could find some paperwork".
I said nothing of the kind. I said EU workers are leaving and that certain industries such as the NHS and agriculture are having trouble hiring as a result.
I’ve been locked in one of those containers (for a joke) and when the “unit” (the refrigerator) is on it’s really noisy inside and you can’t hear someone right next to you. The same units are used for freezing and chilling.
Also, when they’ve been closed for a while it’s fucking hard to get the doors open because there’s a vacuum. You have to pull like fuck the get them to inch slowly open and that goes for the standard sea-containers too.
And no paperwork would be left inside. Ever (food hygiene etc). The doors would be sealed and the paperwork would be collected from the transport office, complete with serial numbers of the aluminum/plastic seals.
So this driver is in on it. (At first I thought he was opening the doors to get ready to backup onto the delivery bay (as you can’t open them once you’re on a bay, or if there’s other trucks next to you on other bays, but there’s no visible sign of a yard in those pictures. Plus the shunter or goods inwards would be the one to remove the seal and check it against the paperwork so you wouldn’t be allowed to do it outside the “yard” (business premises).)
It’s amusing that they saw “Asian” and assumed Chinese. I’m guessing all the victims are Vietnamese tricked into paying for a VIP smuggle route. I don’t ever hear of Chinese trying to get into the UK when they can earn more in a big City in China, or Cambodia.

I think you may find it is multi nationalities. Just because some came from Vietnam, doesn't mean they all did.
The truck left Belgium or wherever with the final haul. I imagine it will be more than one nationality, perhaps many.

One of them was the daughter of a priest from Nghe An province which suggests she comes from a reasonably well off background. If they were all paying $20,000 for the trip they all must be relatively rich as well - that's the price of a house in somewhere like Nghe An.
Perhaps I am still being naïve but why would someone well off in Vietnam want to live in Britain as an illegal immigrant working in a sweat shop or a takeaway place with no civil rights and the constant threat of arrest and deportation?
It doesn't make any sense.
Again - and this is maybe naïve of me - how hard is it for a Vietnamese to get a tourist visa to the UK. If you have $20,000 in the bank isn't that enough to get booked on some guided 4 week tour. Then you get to fly here on Vietnam Airlines and do a runner in country if you are so desperate to live in the west.
This seems to me to be a tragic and extremely sad situation on many levels.

A lot more details in the story here, including how they scraped the money together. Details towards the end of the page.
Terrible tragedy, all those guys were hoping for a new life.

Perhaps your memory is failing as you approach your winter years. Allow me to remind you of what you wrote:
EU workers have gone home and are not coming back. Hospitals can’t hire orderlies, farms can’t get their fruit picked. This is happening now. Poles and Romanians are leaving in their thousands. A year ago I had a Greek and a Romanian working in my team in a law firm. Both have gone home. Both said they no longer felt welcome in the U.K. and both had been verbally assaulted in the streets

One has to wonder how anyone 'in the streets' would know that they were Greek and Romanian.
Were they walking around dressed like this?
