Bali without tourists: once-bustling hotspots now eerie and overgrown – a photo essay

Not much different than Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, i guess.

Had a two-week holiday in Bali at the beginning of this year.
From an entirely selfish point of view, it was fucking marvellous. If you can leap the hoops, now is a great time to travel.

@RobW I agree with you 100% cause that's the way i feel in Kampot, too. No friggin tourists but some western trash male/female remains (unfortunately).
I go to Kampotty most weeks at the moment.Guest wrote: ↑Sat Oct 09, 2021 1:30 pm@RobW I agree with you 100% cause that's the way i feel in Kampot, too. No friggin tourists but some western trash male/female remains (unfortunately).
Don't really see foreign trash - more some very sad cases doing the best they can. The dudes talking to themselves I suppose would be diagnosed with Alzheimers or something if they were back home.
They don't bother anyone.

@RobW you obviously have not encountered the scum "screaming at khmer" people sitting in restaurants. And abuse them for spending the money they stole. Or the punching bags (mostly brits and aussies) or the "I don't wear a mask anywhere - not even in your supermarket - fuck you" guys. I am glad you have a good memory of Kampot. It's still nice if you can avoid the "Family Bar" crowd.
I talk to myself but not when anyone can hear. Doesn’t everyone do that?
Driving along and you see something odd or stupid “Look at that idiot” etc but not too anyone.
Do I have Alzheimers?

Not restricted to Bali. I live in Sa Pa, in the north of Vietnam. I would guess that 90+% of the people earn their living from tourism one way or another. The whole place is a disaster.

I was just looking at this one yesterday, some pretty shocking footage.

Not taking anything away from the hardship people are going through, but some of those places they had been taking tourism and tourists for granted for many years, maybe this whole episode will be an eye opener and an attitude reset.
Cambodia hadn't quite got to the stage of tourism apathy that other neighbours clearly had, but pre-covid you sensed that it was on its way at times.

This is your big chance to experience Southeast Asia like Richard did on his bicycle in the '70s.

Right so what about the fact the borders are still shut?

No, haven't met them, but I've been in Family Bar.Guest wrote: ↑Sat Oct 09, 2021 4:05 pm@RobW you obviously have not encountered the scum "screaming at khmer" people sitting in restaurants. There is a slightly imperial feel amongst the peace and love crowd: They talk about our town and seem to have plans for how it should be...it's a weird lefty colonialism.

Cheap as chips too, I would imagine, just as it was 21 years ago on Lombok after the Muslim/Christian violence, including the torching of churches and killings. That kind of stuff really kills tourism on the larger scale.
