It’s looking increasingly like it was a Ukrainian fuck up. If that bears out Zelensky needs to speak and speak now; otherwise he will lose critical good will.
It’s clearly an accident. Front up, deal with it, move on.
His silence is a huge mis- step.

This just gave Russia a huge advantage.
A similar future incident could be staged or occur and it would take days to verify the culprit. Even Zelensky must be aware that they will need irrefutable proof next time.

What advantage has this given Russia, vlad? I don’t see anyone at the G20 meeting doing anything except regret an unfortunate accident and one that wouldn’t have occurred if your hero wasn’t illegally bombing its neighbour.
You don't see any advantage to Russia of Zelensky making himself look like an idiot/ deliberately attempting to escalate things using false information?Guest wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 1:56 pmWhat advantage has this given Russia, vlad? Zero future credibility
Zelensky is a politician, not a military man. One thing he's done is let the military make the major decisions, unlike Putin.
If his military have one story, he might have to stick with that for the time being, rather than upset his command on the ground.
I'm sure the tone will change in a few days. He has to walk a fine line of keeping his NATO backers happy, but more importantly inspire morale from the guys in Ukraine ho are fighting and dying daily.
I see no conspiracy in this, just a complicated situation- and one that was predictable since Feb, the only surprise is that it has taken so long for such an incident to occur.

End of Week 39 of the Russo-Ukrainian War and snow has started falling in much of Ukraine, but it will be some time before the ground becomes firm enough for substantive cross-country armoured manoeuvres. For either side wishing to go on the offensive, proper Winter kit for infantry is essential.
In the West, North and North East there were no changes on the ground. Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure continued through the week, with Ukraine reportedly having lost 50% of its national power generation & distribution capacity. Air defences have poured into the country, resulting in a greater concentration of Russian strikes at distribution infrastructure rather than power generation, though reportedly hardly any thermal or hydro power plant is unscathed.
There were no changes in relation to the posture of Belarusian or joint Belarus-Russia forces.
Along the Luhansk front there were continued minor advances by Ukraine towards Svatove through the week. Towns North of Kupyansk were also reportedly retaken by Ukrainian forces, though it is unclear if these were taken some time ago and the information only recently released.
In Donetsk there were few changes. Russia continues its assault upon Bakhmut and further South near Adriivka and Pavlivka, without any substantive changes in territory. Mud has reportedly halted a number of Russian offensives in the region.
In Zaporizhzhia there were no reported changes. Shelling of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant resumed with both sides accusing the other.
In Kherson, there are reports of Ukrainian forces crossing the Dnieper at its mouth to take the Kinburn Spit and possibly the Kinburn Peninsular. It is unclear at this stage if the Ukrainians intend to remain there or are simply clearing the area of Russian forces.
There was reportedly a strike by a Ukrainian naval drone on the Russian sea-port of Novoryssiysk where Russia relocated much of its Black Sea submarine fleet and amphibious landing craft following the Ukrainian naval attack on the port of Sevastopol. Whilst acknowledged by both Russian and Ukrainian sources, the impact of the strike is unknown.

The death of Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makey (64) is being reported. There is no explanation offered regarding his sudden demise and he appeared to be in good health.
He was pro-Lukashenka rather than pro-Putin so naturally the rumour mill has gone into overdrive.

End of Week 40 of the Russo-Ukrainian War and soldiers without adequate Winter clothing & equipment are already suffering from the change in weather. The ground remains muddy.
In the West, North and North East there were no changes on the ground.
There were no changes in relation to the posture of Belarusian or joint Belarus-Russia forces. The Foreign Minister of Belarus died during the week, no explanation as to the nature of his death has been offered.
Along the Luhansk front there were not any significant changes. The Russians appear to have slowed counter-offensive efforts near Kreminna and are adopting a defensive posture in the region as Ukrainian forces continue efforts to push Eastwards.
In Donetsk there were reports of Russian advances with a village reportedly taken South of Bakhmut. Russia advanced near Adviika which was not substantial in terms of territory, however included taking heavily fortified positions that Ukraine held since 2014. Whether these operational advances can be turned into a strategic success will become clearer as the week progresses.
In Zaporizhzhia there were no reported changes.
In Kherson there were no reported changes.
Strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure during the week resulted in a blackout in Moldova.

End of Week 41 of the Russo-Ukrainian War and another wave of missiles hit Ukrainian electricity infrastructure whilst Russia’s strategic bomber fleet was struck at their bases deep inside Russian territory.
In the West, North and North East there were no changes on the ground.
There were no changes in relation to the posture of Belarusian or joint Belarus-Russia forces. Russian troops and equipment in Belarus appear to be primarily mobilised forces undergoing training by Belarus due to the degradation of Russian training capacity.
Along the Luhansk front there were some gains by Ukrainian forces in the North, near the Russian border as well as around both Svatove and Kreminna. Several villages are reported as taken however nothing at this stage that constitutes a major break-through, though momentum remains with the Ukrainians in this theatre.
In Donetsk there appears no further progress from Russian forces following their advances near Bakhmut and Adviika the week prior. Bakhmut in particular appears to have become politically important, with Russian forces having assaulted the town with significant men and equipment since August 1st, over four months ago. The area reportedly resembles scenes from WW1 with positional trench warfare and high casualty rates from artillery fire.
In Zaporizhzhia there were no reported changes.
In Kherson there were no reported changes. There were reports of several Ukrainian actions on the left bank of the Dnieper, though at this stage there is no suggestion these extend beyond reconnaissance operations and clearance raids. The situation on the Kinburn Spit & Peninsular remains uncertain with conflicting information; certainly I’ve seen nothing to suggest the Ukrainians did more than clear Russian forces from the area.
Hungary blocked an 18 billion EU aid package to Ukraine, though it is likely the funds will still be transferred using different mechanisms.

End of Week 42 of the Russo-Ukrainian War and Ukraine and the grind continues with reports of the Russian-backed authorities in Luhansk issuing draft notices to women for the first time.
In the West, North and North East there were no changes on the ground. There was an attempted incursion of Russian forces near Ternova, however this was repelled and most likely an action to ensure Ukraine retains forces in the area.
There were reports of Belarus moving additional forces to the border with Ukraine, however the general assessment is that Belarus is unlikely to invade.
Along the Luhansk front there were some gains by Ukraine near Kremmina, however in general there was little movement along the front.
In Donetsk, there were some advances by Russian forces near Bakhmut during the week that caused a stir amongst the milblogger community. It appeared these were the result of Ukraine rotating the 93rd Mechanised Brigade out of the area and replacing them with several brigades that were in Kherson. The front has reportedly stabilised since, with Russian forces on the edge of the city. Further South, Russia reportedly undertook a large attack near Velyka Novosilka which was unsuccessful
In Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine reportedly advanced towards Polohy. There were several HIMARS strikes that hit Russian forces encamped in Melitopol which were widely reported upon. A major bridge near Melitopol partially collapsed, most likely due to partisan activity.
In Kherson there were no reported changes. Vitaly Bulyuk, the Russian-appointed first deputy governor of Kherson region, was targeted in an assassination attempt when his car exploded in Skadovsk. He appears to have survived though there are conflicting reports as to the extent his injuries.
