BBC Vs Gary Linekar
BBC Vs Gary Linekar
Gary Lineker has been told to step back from presenting Match of the Day until an agreement is reached on his social media use, the BBC has said.
It follows an impartiality row over comments he made criticising the government's new asylum policy.
The BBC said it considered Lineker's "recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines".
It added he should "keep well away from taking sides on party political issues or political controversies".
Now pundits Ian Wright, Alan Shearer, Micah Richards and Jermaine Jenas have all said they would not appear on the show.
Alex Scott hinted the same while six members of the MOTD commentating team said they would not take part.

Agreed.
However if his employment contract says to maintain an image on social media that doesn’t negatively impact on the BBC, then that’s what he should do or face the consequences. It’s the same for the majority of employees.
Expressing political opinions is not supposed to be what the BBC does - I don’t watch it these days but it’s probably lost any impartiality it had long ago, much like similar organisations

Jug-eared clown Shineker even made up a fake letter from a supposed refugee he took in to his opulent mansion, the letter the dinghy dweller left was signed “Rasheed” an absolute crock and he took NO Ukrainians in whatsoever the pathetic hypocrite!

He works on the sports side, not the political side. He isn’t expressing opinions on BBC channels and is only employed as a freelancer.
The chairman of the BBC publicly donated hundreds of thousands to the Tory party and is neck deep in Boris’ dodgy dealings, seems duplicitous to demand an employee be straight down the middle when the big boss clearly isn’t.

Any basis/proof to these allegations? I know he did take in refugees - i thought they were Ukrainian but I could be wrong. The guy has a massive net worth, but he also is very socially minded and donates but doesn’t publicise his charity.Phnom Penh Trader wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 10:43 amJug-eared clown Shineker even made up a fake letter from a supposed refugee he took in to his opulent mansion, the letter the dinghy dweller left was signed “Rasheed” an absolute crock and he took NO Ukrainians in whatsoever the pathetic hypocrite!

Companies I worked for have had clauses about not bringing negativity to their brand in any form anywhere via any channels or circumstances. Public expression of opinions were to be managed with self awareness and an understanding of what you faced if caught out . Slagging off a (corporate) customer in any form, and them being aware you work for the company providing them services could be enough to lose business (as one example).ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 10:47 amHe works on the sports side, not the political side. If Gary’s contract has a similar clause, It makes no difference at all if he worked on the sports desk. It makes no difference that it was his personal opinion.
I’m not defending the BBC - so no reason to bring up examples of its own wrong doings to support Gary’s situation. Lack of consistency is a different matter. If his contract says it, they are within their rights to enforce it regardless of their shortcomings

ALL EMPLOYEES that work for the BBC are supposed to be impartial specifically because it is funded solely by the UK taxpayer,Shineker was not impartial and therefore deserves to lose his job as would happen at any private company for the same gross misconduct.violet wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 10:54 amCompanies I worked for have had clauses about not bringing negativity to their brand in any form anywhere via any channels or circumstances. Do you even follow the news? Richard Sharp the BBC chair is extremely involved in Tory politics. Which isn’t unusual in itself but he failed to declare his significant recent involvement when being considered for the role.Phnom Penh Trader wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 10:55 amWhat utter garbage Boris Johnson especially was trying to defund the BBC for its Britain-hating,Lie-Bore promoting agenda while he was the sitting Prime Minister, what colour are the moons on your planet ffs?ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 10:47 amHe works on the sports side, not the political side. Here is a useful 2 minute synopsis of the hypocrisy and double standards.
The BBC could teach RT how to control a state media, truly

I’ve no idea what’s in his contract, neither do all of the people involved commenting on this issue.violet wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 10:54 amCompanies I worked for have had clauses about not bringing negativity to their brand in any form anywhere via any channels or circumstances. But I do know Lineker is a clever guy and I’d be surprised if he intentionally put the job (which he apparently loves) at risk by him expressing his opinions on social issues.
Saying that he is extremely popular in the football world, and perhaps he felt he was untouchable. And used his perceived privileged position to stoke public opinion.
Even if that is the case then he is using his privilege for good rather than for personal gain as has been the norm for this incumbent government.
All other pundits and commentator have gone on strike in solidarity with Lineker. There is also talk of PFA members refusing interviews with BBC until this is satisfactorily resolved.
MoTD is going to be prettyweird this weekend!
