Map of Phnom Penh during DK
Hey everyone,
I've had to move recently and cull like 75% of my Cambodia books - and I can't tell if I'm remembering whether or not there was a map of Phnom Penh and various DK ministries in one of them or not?
Does anyone know of any such map? I thought it was in Andrew Mertha's book but I was mistaken... I've checked the ECCC archive and they don't have one digitised there either.
Any help would be great !

I've never seen one, only DK national maps.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
There’s one at the start of Pol Pot

I bought that when it came out but it's far away now. I must check out the map. There is some mystery about where some offices were located. As you probably know they were very secretive and I don't know of any map of the capital they produced themselves.Ping pong wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 8:33 amThere’s one at the start of Pol Pot

iirc, Lon NOL's HQ was in the current Senate compound, near the north-eastern boundary
I'm not sure what happened after he was ousted, perhaps taken over by the KR?
It's not easily accessible today

Yes, that was where he resided during the early 70s in the Chamkarmon Palace compound. There are some bunkers he had built there and a big underground "war room". He also had a house on 271 where the Phnom Penh Sports Club is today but I don't think he lived there after war broke out. Street 271 was raised in the early 70s as a defensive barrier, this is still evident today.xylophone wrote: ↑Thu Oct 27, 2022 6:57 amiirc, Lon NOL's HQ was in the current Senate compound, near the north-eastern boundary

How come the "Kratie/505" zone doesn't have a title in the latter map? Lost in translation?

I'm not sure, I'll see what I can find out.
https://gsp.yale.edu/dk-provinces-zones ... -districtsAt present, our Democratic Kampuchea has been divided into six zones and some other regions distinctively designated with their own administrations, not under any zone. Kampong Som is a city under a separate administration like the other Regions. The Regions or cities under separate administrations are directly controlled by the State Organization, not via any Zone. At the same time, we have created certain new districts, including Koh Chey (formerly called Preah Sdech District), Krasaing District in the Eastern Zone, Taing Kok and Baray districts in the Northern Zone, Choam Sangke in the Southwest Zone, Thmar Sar in the Western Zone, and Kandieng, Kdat, Thlea Ma-am, and Samlot, in the Northwest Zone.
Our six zones are the Northeast Zone, Eastern Zone, Southwest Zone, Western Zone, Northern Zone, and Northwest Zone. We do not establish a zone for each province, and thus each of certain zones consist of two or more provinces. For example, we have combined all of Svay Rieng and Prey Veng together with part of Kampong Cham province located on the left bank of the Mekong to form the Eastern zone.

My understanding is 505 special zone was a military zone, they grew their own rice, veg and livestock. Basically a massive military camp.

This PDF has a map of Phnom Penh during DK. You'll have to read the text for the details.

L.L. thanks for finding and linking that.
I had a long chat with a Khmer current Cambodian government official who arrived back at P.P. from the countryside in early January 1980. He said he stayed at the Monyvong bridge roundabout for 3-4 months and was only allowed, escorted, into the city a few times during that interval, before eventually being given a job. On those first visits, he said, the city seemed totally empty. Of course, before he arrived, the DK government and presumably most city workers ran away to escape the invading Vietnamese, but he did make it sound like an abandoned ghost town.
On several occasions, different Cambodians have told me that the end of DK country rule for them didn't happen till March/April 1980, as they were housed in central Pursat - perhaps Veal Veng area? - and the Vietnamese military took a while to get there. Sorry, too lazy to research myself, do you know when the Vietnamese took Koh Kong?
One interior Pursat trip with Ray, perhaps 2005?, I saw a huge pile of anti-tank mines (more than 30) in Tmar Da (Thai border) perhaps 1 km up onto the Cardamomoms above the bridge towards the pass. They told us they were from Vietnamese/Khmer fighting and at the time I thought it might be some crazy mid-1980's southward extension on the K5 line. Now it occurs to me that they more likely were placed in 1980, defensively by the DK, still in the mountains, as Vietnamese tanks moved up along the Thai border from Koh Kong into SW Pursat. I can't imagine many tanks trying the route over the pass, even with the new Chinese road! Any thoughts?
To me as an expat motorbiking around in the sticks, the Tmar Da area always had a weird feel to it, different to other Khmer Rouge areas like Anlong Veng, Bueng Trakoun & Oh Bei Chon (North of Poipet), Pailin or Samlout in the later 90's, and different again from my first Veal Veng trip in 2000. Perhaps because the Vietnamese occasionally pushed up there from the south making it more politically messy?
