Why do you stay in Cambodia, instead of the neighbors; Thailand or Vietnam?

Not necessarily, some people live here because they actually like the country. I've never even considered the idea of living in Thailand or Vietnam. The OP's question is a bit like asking someone who lives in France why they don't live in Spain or Germany. Why would they?over the rainbow wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2019 5:31 pmOnly if ur not making enough or have enough to live elsewhere
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

i lived in rural Thailand for a few years before i landed in Cambodia, i did like it and started a nice business that kept me busy, before that i was married to a lady from Vietnam, she was a doctor in Australia and we visited Vietnam a few times, but for me Cambodian people are the salt of the earth, basic, and friendly, hard working and loyal so i just stayed here, some 17 years but seriously not considered going anywhere just yet.

Yes, Some fit that contextualisation. Many don't.tarariverboat wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2019 8:42 pm... but for me Cambodian people are the salt of the earth, basic, and friendly, hard working and loyal
Most local people totally environmentally unaware; there's widespread cruelty to animals, utter selfishness and lack of human empathy. This is not endemic, but one does witness it much more here than in most other places (one does not want to sound like Prince Charles, here, but...)
I think the rose-tinted glasses magnify the pleasant aspects (I see many) but there is also an inherent nastiness, which manifests itself in some people - the desire to totally dominate the road, without giving a hoot about causing serious injury...
Many are wonderful; many are sickeningly self-centred.
Just trying to balance perspectives, mate!

just a few people:) living in siem reap and spending lots of time out on the lake i mostly see nice people, for years i rode a motor bike in sydney and learnt to ride drive or ride accordingly and same here, but i have had so many locals help me i have lost count, a few times life threatening(my fault mostly)springrain wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2019 9:18 pmMate, I find that a sweeping generalisation.tarariverboat wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2019 8:42 pm... but for me Cambodian people are the salt of the earth, basic, and friendly, hard working and loyal

Just my observations, mate!
been in a flooded ditch with my heavy motor bike on top of me at midnight, pinned down and under water, the locals not only pulled the bike off me they took my bike and me home and would not accept money,
had 100s of villages fight a fire threatening a large riverboat i had dry docked on the land, they stayed for 3 days and nights,no mention of money.
seen me changing a tire(on my car) and rushed in to do the whole job and told me to go and have a cold beer over the road, whilst they finished, again not accept money from me.
a time when my car was bogged in mud, same thing told me to relax as they lifted in out, no money was accepted,
99% of my friends here are local people, a few expats but i mostly mix with locals and do find them the salt of the earth, and i been here a long time now, i do hear what you are saying about cruety to animals mostly dogs, kicking them if they get in there way, i just tell the people i will kick them and to leave the dog alone and give the dog a pat:) in the street i live we have very good looking dogs, well feed but they are shy of some people for the same reasons, but always come tome for a pat:)
Since we're comparing to the Vietnamese, I wouldn't say Cambodians stand out as hard-working, it's more like exactly the opposite. I agree with the rest though.tarariverboat wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2019 8:42 pmCambodian people are the salt of the earth, basic, and friendly, hard working and loyal so i just stayed here

Thanks, tara; it's great that you see the 'lovely' in people. I am a cynic. It's wonderful that you are experiencing the undoubted benevolence of good people. I, too, live in Siem Reap and I love it here. Carry on enjoying your time here, mate!tarariverboat wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2019 5:31 amjust a few people:) living in siem reap and spending lots of time out on the lake i mostly see nice people, for years i rode a motor bike in sydney and learnt to ride drive or ride accordingly and same here, but i have had so many locals help me i have lost count, a few times life threatening(my fault mostly).springrain wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2019 9:18 pmMate, I find that a sweeping generalisation.tarariverboat wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2019 8:42 pm... but for me Cambodian people are the salt of the earth, basic, and friendly, hard working and loyal

Thanks Tara. It's easy to become jaded and negative about cambodia. But your posted has reminded me of the many times I've been helped by strangers here. I can immediately recall four occasions that I've been assisted after a bike crash - all but one my fault for being intoxicated. Once I slammed the bike near the old prison on Christmas Eve, some metal workers just dragged me to the curb and parked the bike and carried on drinking while I sobered up. Good Times!

Isn't that more for a "Why do they let us stay in Cambodia thread", though mate?

And there was I thinking you were one of the more sensible people around here.
