I agree with you after living here for 16 years I have seen it allspringrain wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2019 9:18 pmYes, Some fit that contextualisation. Most local people totally environmentally unaware; there's widespread cruelty to animals, utter selfishness and lack of human empathy. This is not endemic, but one does witness it much more here than in most other places (one does not want to sound like Prince Charles, here, but...)
I think the rose-tinted glasses magnify the pleasant aspects (I see many) but there is also an inherent nastiness, which manifests itself in some people - the desire to totally dominate the road, without giving a hoot about causing serious injury...
Many are wonderful; many are sickeningly self-centred.
Just trying to balance perspectives, mate!
Why do you stay in Cambodia, instead of the neighbors; Thailand or Vietnam?

What do you think is the defining factor between the two groups? Is it cultural? Or poverty, or what?springrain wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2019 9:18 pmYes, Some fit that contextualisation. Viets rude? After five years in the epi center of civilization (lost), I e China, I find the Viets refreshingly courteous and cute while I'm on vacation.
They're quite direct though which I guess might be taken for rudeness if you're used to Thailand. But I like the Viet efficiency, I find they usually get things done quickly.

I live in Thailand but am considering a move to Phnom Penh. As a 34 year old the visa situation is getting progressively harder out here.
Stuck in the low cost of living and easy visa mud...
What else? Close to other cheap countries and good getaways...Not that I getaway very often anymore..

I live in Laos. Its quiet, clean, no traffic, no noise pollution, low crime and the people are generally friendly and honest. Visas and work permits are relatively straight forward too.
Having lived in Chiang Mai, Nha Trang, Hanoi and Saigon it is by the far the best place I have lived.

Not sure what city activities are. Do you mean traffic jams, getting lost, taxis and dog shit?

I get where you're coming from B. We both know the darkside, and I'm glad you made it out, and hope you make a decent go of it. For once it is probably better than '93.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
